Taking advantage of Elizabeth City’s waterfront vista, the Museum of the Albemarle contains exhibits and facilities enabling visitors to experience the general history of northeastern North Carolina. A chronological overview of the region is presented in the 7,000-square-foot main gallery with artifacts and graphics illustrating the geography and ecology of the area in addition to perspectives on its cultural development over the past 10,000 years.  An audio tour is also available to museum visitors with mobile devices.    ...

United States Coast Guard base in Elizabeth City, opened in 1940, is the largest Coast Guard installation in the country. It is home to the following 6 commands: National Strike Force Coordination Center, Base Support Unit Elizabeth City, Aviation Technical Training Center, Air Station Elizabeth City, Station Elizabeth City and the Aviation Logistics Center. Scenes from the motion picture “The Guardian” were filmed at the air station.
