3:00 PM - 5:00 PM
If you've ever wondered about the chemistry of plants and the science behind some medical miracles, visit Museum of the Albemarle and learn about the genius of Percy Julian. The museum invites you to join them on Sunday, June 25th from 3 pm - 5 pm. for a showing of the NOVA documentary “Forgotten Genius: Percy Julian”, the story of a chemist at a Midwestern paint company that made a startling discovery, one that could improve the health of millions of people. The company wants him to stick to making paint, but this man has always gone his own way. He was the grandson of Alabama slaves, yet he went on to become one of America’s great scientists. Percy Julian met with every possible barrier in a deeply segregated America. He was a man of genius, devotion, and determination. As a black man, he was also an outsider, fighting to make a place for himself in a profession and country divided by bigotry—a man who would eventually find freedom in the laboratory. His science helped unlock the secret chemistry of plants, a discovery that would help relieve one of the most crippling human diseases and plunge him into one of the fiercest battles in the history of science. Light refreshments will be served in the lobby.
